Create reader challenges

Readers earn most badges automatically just by reading and collecting. But you can set them a goal too: a reader challenge, running for as long as you like, that awards a badge to everyone who finishes it. Here's how to build one, and exactly what the system will and won't let you do.

Read time about 6 min

1What a challenge actually is

A challenge is a goal plus a reward badge. You name the goal, pick the badge, and the platform watches your readers' real activity and awards it the moment someone qualifies. There is nothing to approve and nothing to hand out by hand. Readers see your live challenges on the public badges page, and their winnings show up on their profile and in their menagerie.

The reward comes from the platform's badge catalog, and there are three challenge badges to choose from. You cannot upload custom badge art yet, so pick the one that fits your goal. Seasonal badges and multi-step missions are set by the platform, not by studios.
Pro note
The badge is the same for everyone who earns it, but the goal is entirely yours. That's where your personality goes.

2Create one

Go to your studio's Audience tab and find Reader challenges, then press Create challenge. Give it a Title (at least five characters, something like October Read-a-thon) and an optional Description telling readers what to do. Pick a Reward badge from the three on offer, each shown with its rarity. Then set the goal, and optionally a Starts and Ends date.

Managing the Audience tab is an owner or admin job. Leave the dates blank and the challenge simply runs from now until you stop it.
Pro note
Write the description as an instruction, not a riddle. 'Read 10 issues this month to earn the badge' is perfect.

3Pick a goal the system can see

Goals are chosen from a dropdown, not written freehand, because every one of them has to be something the platform can verify from real reading activity. There are three: Read N issues (you set the number), Complete a series (any of your series, or one you name), and Maintain an N-day streak (you set the days). That's the whole menu, and the constraint is the feature: nobody can fake their way to your badge.

Pro note
Complete a series is the sneaky-good one. It turns a reader who tried issue one into a reader who finished the whole run.

4Run it, watch it, wind it down

Once it exists, a challenge sits in your list with a status pill: upcoming, active, or ended. Beside it you'll see the reward badge, the dates, and a live earner count, which is the number worth watching. An active challenge can be stopped with End early, and a challenge can be removed entirely with Delete. Ended challenges stay in your history so you can see how each one did.

Ending a challenge early doesn't take a badge back from anyone who already earned it. Awarded is awarded.
Pro note
Run a short one first. A two-week challenge with ten earners teaches you more than a year-long one with none.

Quick questions

Not yet. Reward badges come from the platform's badge catalog, and there are three challenge badges to pick from, each with its own rarity. The goal is yours to invent; the artwork is shared.

Three, all chosen from a dropdown: Read N issues, Complete a series (any of yours, or a specific one), and Maintain an N-day streak. They're limited to things the platform can verify from genuine reading activity, so the badge can't be gamed.

No. The platform watches reader activity and awards the badge automatically the moment someone meets the goal. There's nothing to approve or hand out.

No, those are set by the platform. Studios create reader challenges; seasonal badges and multi-step missions come from FoundryInk itself.

It stops accepting new earners and moves to ended, but anyone who already earned the badge keeps it. You can also delete a challenge outright.

On the public badges page, while it's live. Once earned, the badge shows on the reader's profile and in their menagerie alongside everything else they've collected.

Something to chase

A goal your readers can see, a badge they can earn, and a counter that tells you it worked. Next, get your books onto real shelves.
